UW Gazette, May 7, 1997 Nineteen retired staff and faculty members are to receive special honours at this month's convocation ceremonies, and there will be honorary degrees to ten people, including one of the university's pioneers. The names were announced April 22 after getting final approval from the UW senate the previous night. To be honoured as "distinguished professor emeritus": ù Dr. Ian Blake, electrical and computer engineering ù Dr. Jiri Cizek, applied mathematics ù Dr. Dorothy Counts, anthropology ù Dr. Roger Downer, biology (he was also vice-president, university relations) ù Dr. Jack Hanna, accountancy ù Dr. Koncay Huseyin, systems design engineering ù Dr. Hugh Kerr, mechanical engineering ù Dr. George Raithby, mechanical engineering ù Dr. Bill Scott, accountancy ù Dr. David Sprott, statistics and actuarial science (and UW's first dean of mathematics, 1966-1972) To be named "honorary member of the university": ù Dr. George Atkinson, retired from the chemistry department and from a long career on UW's senate and many committees; he was also founder of the "liberal science" program ù Dr. Robin Banks, retired psychology professor, long- time dean of arts (1979-1991) and associate provost, academic affairs (1993-1996) ù Ron Dunkley, retired assistant dean of mathematics, organizer of UW's mathematics contests who recently received the Order of Canada for his work in supporting high school math teaching ù Dr. Phil Eastman, retired physics professor, organizer of the Sir Isaac Newton physics contest ù Dr. Ron Eydt, former biology professor, retired last year after 30 years as warden of residences ù Art Headlam, formerly UW's comptroller and later director of research services, now retired ù Dick Knight, retired as academic counsellor in the faculty of arts ù Dr. Russel Legge, retired professor of religious studies, dean of St. Paul's United College ù Joan Wiley, retired as manager of telephone services To receive honorary degrees: ù Dr. Michael Smith, biochemist at the University of British Columbia, winner of the 1993 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his pioneering work in manipulating genetic material ù Dr. Glenn Seaborg, chemist at the University of California at Berkeley, winner of the 1951 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his research in the synthesis of new chemical elements ù Dr. Sylvia Ostry, economist and former chief statistician of Canada, who is retiring as UW's chancellor ù Dr. Bernard Ostry, her husband, former chairman of TVOntario and federal and provincial civil servant ù Laurie Dexter, a member of the 1988 Polar Bridge Expedition across the Arctic Ocean ù Dr. Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao, pioneering statistical researcher, of the Pennsylvania State University ù Dr. Ralph Stanton, chair of UW's department of mathematics and then first dean of graduate studies (1962- 1966), now at the University of Manitoba ù Douglas Barber, president of Gennum Corp., a high- technology company based in Burlington that has co-op and research links with UW ù John Bergsma, president of Union Gas Ltd., first UW alumnus to become chair of the university's board of governors (he graduated in engineering in 1969) Val O'Donovan, chief executive of Com Dev Ltd., will be installed as UW's new chancellor, at the Wednesday, May 28, session of convocation. He'll speak that day, as students in applied health studies, environmental studies and independent studies graduate. Other speakers will be Dexter (May 29, arts); Smith (May 30, science); Stanton (May 31, morning, mathematics); and Bergsma (May 31, afternoon, engineering).
