UW Gazette, December 3, 1997 The Conference Board of Canada and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council have presented a partnership award to UW and several software partners for their achievements in innovation. The Canadian Strategic Software Consortium, a contractual joint venture of seven Canadian software companies and UW, is one of the winners in the 1997 University-Industry Synergy Research and Development Part nerships Award Program. The award, announced earlier, was presented during a conference on university-industry cooperation, held in Richmond, British Columbia, late in October. Computer science professor Dr. Frank Tompa, computer science, was the principal investigator for UW's participation in the consortium's Text/Relational Database Management Systems Project. The award includes a $10,000 research grant for UW. The seven software partners are Fulcrum Technologies Inc., Systems Graftnetix Inc., EveryWare Development Inc., Megalith Technologies Inc., Open Text Corp., PSSoftware Solutions Ltd. and SoftQuad Inc. "The annual synergy awards recognize excellence in university research, superior management, innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship," said Ron Duhamel, the fed eral secretary of state for science, research and development, in announcing the awards. "They underscore in a very tangible way, the exciting opportunities that await Canadian young people who choose careers in science and technology."
