UW Gazette, December 3, 1997 The murder of 14 women engineering students in Montrˇal on a pre-exam day eight years ago will be remembered this week at ceremonies to be held at UW and across Canada. The 14 were shot in a classroom at the Ecole Polytechnique by a young man who said he hated "feminists". He also killed himself. Canada, and its universities most of all, mourned them then and mourns them still: Genevi¸ve Bergeron Hˇl¸ne Colgan Nathalie Croteau Maryse Lagani¸re Barbara Daigneault Ann-Marie Edward Maud Haviernick Maryse Leclair Anne-Marie Lemay Sonia Pelletier Michele Richard Annie St-Arneault Annie Turcotte Barbara Maria Klueznick "We will remember the fourteen women killed at L'Ecole Polytechnique in 1989, as well as all victims of violence," says Heather Calder of the UW Federation of Students, who is helping to organize the ceremony here. It's to be held Friday at 5:30 p.m. in Siegfried Hall, St. Jerome's College. "We will light candles in memory of the women," says Calder, "and hear reflections on the Massacre from members of the UW community. "A sign language interpreter will be present, and the hall is fully wheelchair accessible. We encourage all members of the student body, staff and faculty to attend." She adds: "Because many UW students may not be aware of the events of December 6, 1989, the organizing committee will provide information and a display about the event during the week of December 2-5." Organizers represent the Federation, the women's centre, and the Engineering Society. "Any questions about the ceremony or the Massacre can be directed to any of these bodies."
