People across campus are being urged to help make the sun shine, on a day that comes just once every four years. Leap year day - Thursday, February 29 - is the last day of a gray and chilly month, but it can be warm with smiles, say the organizers, including Sheila Wilson of health services, who had the idea in the first place. Her suggestion for a little cheer in her own department has spread across campus, and now there's an organizing committee for "Make the Sun Shine Day", two weeks from tomorrow. "It's meant to be a fun day, with no pressure as a fund-raising event," says Nancy Elash of information and public affairs, one of the people who have joined the sun bandwagon. "No one will be looking for any money for this. "We think that it could be a good day for everyone's stress level to go down a bit and relax." So what's happening on the sunny last day of February? "We're hoping that each department will organize their own way of celebrating," she says. Among the suggestions that have surfaced so far: snow volleyball, a summer menu at food services, beach music, summer clothes, "and change your screen-saver to something fun." It's started off as a staff event, but student groups are also being invited to join in, Elash said. Ideas are being welcomed. On the sun-day committee, besides Wilson and Elash, are Rose Bilicic of the Federation of Students, Carole Hea of health services, and Anne Wagland of human resources.
