It was also the year the "Ed Sullivan Show" went off
the air, the year Janis Joplin died, the year of the Kent
State shootings. In short, it was 1970.
     At Waterloo, Dr. Burt Matthews became president of the
university; the Faculty Club (now the University Club) and
the first day-care centre were opened; the university's
annual budget jumped by 10 per cent in a year, from $40
million to $44 million. In one corner of the Campus Centre,
the Radical Student Movement was active; in another corner,
troubled students could spill their thoughts in the "rap
room".
     And a growing university kept hiring new faculty and
staff members. Some of them are still on campus 25 years
later - including this year's president of the facully
association.
     The 1970 newcomers were honoured last night as new
members of UW's 25-Year Club, and had a chance to socialize
with more senior veterans, all the way back to the 1957
arrivals who joined the 25-Year Club when it was created in
1982. Last night's reception was held in Federation Hall.
