Friday: Warrior Volleyball vs. Guelph Gryphons. Athena Volleyball: Last Wednesday night, the Athenas edged the Brock Badgers 3-2 in a tough battle here at home. The match was long and both teams fought hard, pushing the match to a full 5 sets. Scores were 9-15, 16- 14, 9-15, 17-16 and 15-11. This leaves the Athenas with a record of 4-8 with 8 points - putting them tied for 5th place with the possibility of playoff chances still alive. Warrior Volleyball: The Black Plague extended their unbeaten record to an awesome 11-0 last Wednesday night at home,m beating the Brock Badgers 3-1. The Warriors are now the only undefeated team in the OUAA volleyball league and the number one team in the province. Set scores were 9-15, 15-5, 15-4 and 15-9. Scoring big for the Warriors were Rene Holt and Al Schoeder - both with 15 points including 13 kills and 2 stuffs for the win. In a weekend tournament at UniversitŽ Laval, they came in second place overall with details still sketchy at press time. A full report will follow next week. The Black Plague hits Waterloo this Friday night in what should be an easy win as they meet the Guelph Gryphons whose record stands at 1-9. Warrior Hockey: The hockey Warriors completed the first weekend of the last month of regular season play in a bad news, good news situation. The bad news came at the hands of the Guelph Gryphons, who dealt the Warriors a 6-4 loss on Friday night. On the up side, Waterloo rebounded from that loss to defeat the Toronto Varsity Blues on Sunday. On Friday, Waterloo dominated most of the night. They out-shot the Gryphons 48-34 and held a 4-3 lead until Todd Reid tied the game with just under nine minutes left to play in the third period. Then, with 45 seconds left, Guelph went ahead 5-4. They added an empty-net goal at 19:39 to cinch the win. Scoring for Waterloo were Geoff Schneider, Dean MacDonald, Jeff Goldie and Chris Kraemer. The loss to Guelph halted Waterloo's winning streak at five games. On Sunday, the Warriors got back on track with an impressive 6-2 victory over the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. Greg Allen led the attack with two goals and one assist, while Jason Mervyn added one goal and two assists. Goaltender Joe Harris was solid once again, stopping 24 of 26 shots. The win gives Waterloo a much- needed two points as the tight race in the Far West heats up. Warrior Basketball: The Warriors lost an exciting and tough game to the number three nationally ranked McMaster Marauders 104-83 in an exciting at home on Saturday. Their record now stands at 5-3 with six more regular league games left in the season. Fans were treated to a real thriller of a game as the Warriors battled it out with the Marauders in an exceptionally exciting game which saw many talented players doing their stuff on the court. The half time score was 55- 29 but the Warriors came back with a vengeance and several times managed to cut the McMaster lead to 14 points. Top scorers for the Warriors were Tom Balfe with 21 points and 9 rebounds, Sean Van Koughnett with 19 points and 5 rebounds and Nick Poulimenos with 17 points and 2 rebounds. For the Marauders, top scorers were forward Shawn Francis with 26 points and 9 rebounds and guard Titus Channer with 27 points and 9 rebounds. Earlier in the week, Waterloo lost a heartbreaker 69- 67 to the Brock Badgers in St. Catharines. At half-time, the Warriors were ahead 43-35 but they couldn't hang on for the win despite all efforts. High scorers for the team were Sean Van Koughnett with 34 points followed by Mark Hopkins with 10. The Warriors meet the Windsor Lancers at home this Wednesday at 8 p.m. following the Athenas' 6 p.m. game. Athena Basketball: Last Wednesday in St. Catharines, the Athenas rallied for a real team effort, adding another close two-point win to their record in a thrilling game against the Brock Badgers. Jena Steele's defence against national team player Tami Naughton was key to the game. Waterloo won the game on a Lori Kraemer lay-up in the dying seconds. High scorers were Jena Steele with 13 points and 6 rebounds and Sue Kruis with 12 points and 6 rebounds. The Athenas lost to the McMaster Marauders 66-60 at home this past Saturday in another exciting game. Although McMaster controlled the ball and led by 10 points for the most of the game, the Athenas fought hard to keep up. In the final seconds of play, they made a great comeback effort, sinking two 3-pointers and bringing Mac's lead down to 6 for the final score. High scorers for the team were Sue Kruis with 19 points, Jena Steele with 14 and Jodi Hawley with 11. This loss leaves the Athenas in a difficult position for playoffs. They meet the Windsor Lancers this Wednesday at 6 p.m. in a basketball doubleheader in the PAC main gym. Athena Indoor Hockey: In a weekend tournament at the University of Toronto, the Athenas had a win-loss record of 3-3. On Saturday, the Athenas took a 5-2 loss to York early in the day but rebounded for two back-to-back wins. They blew out the Trent team 7-0 with both Linda Mowat and Rachel Brohman scoring 2 each and Bernice Willemse getting a hat trick with 3 goals. They went on to shut out the Western team 2-0 to end the day on a positive note. Scoring for the Athenas were Rachel Brohman, her third of the day and Judy Sahr with a single. On Sunday, they started out with a 5-2 loss to Toronto, followed by a 5-1 win over Queen's. Rachele Brohman had three goals in the game with Sara Creighton and Linda Mowat adding one each. In their final game, they lost 6-3 to Guelph. Kathy Reilly, Linda Mowat and Bernice Willemse all scored one each. Top scorers for the weekend were Bernice Willemse and Rachelle Brohman with 6 goals each and Linda Mowat with 4. The team will travel to Western on March 4-5 for the OWIAA Indoor Hockey finals.
