The United Way "thermometers" are at the 70 per cent mark now, but that's not good enough. As of Thursday, UW staff and faculty had pledged and donated $96,684 to the United Way Campaigne, says Helen Kilbride, the chair of UW's United Way Campaign. "Participation rate so far is a disappointing - 17.3 per cent of 3,284 employees," she adds. Departments and grad students and special events have raised another $4,000 for the campaign. On Thursday the registrar's office held a bake sale and clothing sale, with proceeds going to UW's United Way campaign. The total raised was $516.35 including about $150 from the bake sale, says Bruce Pinder, the United Way area co-ordinator for that office. The staff donated the goods and had first chance to buy things. Clothes not sold were donated to Anselma House. The Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans of Canada, Unit 257, gave a special $5,000 contribution to UW's United Way Campaign. That brings UW's total to $109,000 or 73 per cent of its $150,000 target. "With the campaign closing only three days away, it is clear that we are running quite short of our dollar target of $150,000 and our participation rate target of 35 per cent," Kilbride says. "We know that many people on campus intend to pledge support but have been too busy to send the form in. To give them a chance to do that, we've decided to extend the deadline for receipt of pledges in payroll to 3:30 p.m. on November 10. "All we need is $41,000. We still have 2,700 potential donors. If each gave $15, UW can succeed and reach its goal. Let's give it a real try," Kilbride says. UW faculty, staff, retirees and grad students who donate to United Way through payroll deduction or cheques are eligible to win prizes. The draw will take place in November. Among the prizes: ù two tickets to UW drama productions; ù two season passes for UW sporting events; ù two $25 gift certificates to the University Club; ù two tickets to either a Conrad Grebel College band or choir concert; ù a $25 gift certificate for the bookstore or UW Shop; ù one-year subscription to Alternatives, a journal published in environmental studies; ù two pairs of tickets to any Waterloo Showtime adult show; ù 12 months free parking on campus; ù lunch for two (no alcohol) at the Laurel Room; ù half slab of a special occasion cake from Pastry Plus; ù two dozen pastries from Pastry Plus; ù a Sheaffer desk set; ù hand silk-screened cedar coaster set; ù $100 video package at Video Vendor and free haircut; ù a medium-sized pizza with three items at Gino's Pizza; ù fifteen one-dollar coupons for TCBY; ù a medium-sized pizza with three items at Pizza Hut; ù a $15 gift certificate at Front Row; and ù a gift basket from Be-Dee Sweets. K-W and Area United Way also has a donor draw. That one will take place on December 16. Prizes include airfare for two to Florida; two tickets to "Crazy for You" and a night's accommodation in Toronto; and a $250 shopping spree in Conestoga Mall. Prizes are donated, Kilbride stresses. UW people who contributed to the United Way are automatically eligible for the prizes.
