UW undergraduate chemistry students won six of the ten prizes at the 22nd annual Southwestern Ontario Undergraduate Student Chemistry Conference last month. The conference attracted about 100 students plus faculty from Guelph, McMaster, Toronto (Erindale), Waterloo, Western, Windsor, and York and was hosted by UW's undergraduate chemistry club. UW students presented 23 of the 48 oral presentations on their fourth-year research projects. Winners and their supervisors: inorganic, Shanon Seguin (L. Nazar); biochemistry - the E. Gordon Young Prize, Chantelle McRoberts (J. Honek); organic, John LaRose (M. Chong) and Peter Frese (M. Chong); physical, Paul Michniewicz (B. D. Aguda); Surface Science Prize, Darcy Brewer (K. T. Leung). There were three categories: biochemistry/organic, physical/polymer/theoretical, and analytical/inorganic. Prizes were given for the best presentations in each category. Judges came from Xerox Research Centre of Canada, Dow Chemical Canada Inc., 3M Canada Inc., Ontario ministry of the environment, Wilfrid Laurier University, University of Guelph, and UW. The day concluded with a wine and cheese party followed by a banquet at St. Jerome's College, where the presentations were made. The local committee consisted of students Darcy Brewer, Lennie Bumbacco, Lisa Corbett, Hannah Dayan, David Gibson, Monica Hirsch, Denise Lacombe, Omar Rashid, Jeff Sylvestre and Jennifer Veit.
