"A Celebration of Achievement" was held at UW last week: a special celebration dinner to recognize some of the university's most outstanding students and their achievements in academic excellence, student leadership, community service, athletics, and other areas of personal challenge. Paul Mitchell, chairman of the board of governors, was host for the dinner, held October 5 in the Festival Room of South Campus Hall. The event was organized by the office of the associate provost (student affairs), which offered "special thanks to our former Chairman, the Honourable Trevor Eyton, for his ongoing support of the Celebration of Achievement Dinner". Many UW officials as well as board of governors members were guests at the dinner. Edgar David Seiden - 3rd year Actuarial Science and Statistics Hons Co-op student. A member of the pool staff since 1990 as a instructor and a lifeguard. He is a ski instructor at Chicopee Ski School and has a brown belt in Judo. Currently he is de veloping a new computer program for the UW pool recording keeping. Sean VanKoughnett - 4th year Hons Economic student. An A stu dent and a member of Men's Interuniversity Council. A 3-year member and co-captain of varsity men's basketball. Three time OUAA all star and CIAU freshman of year 1991. A member of Canada's men's national basketball team. Campus Centre Fizza Moloo - 3B Honours Economics student. She is an in ternational student and active in the organization and operation of Islamic Student Association. Her record as a turnkey shows that she is an excellent employee, and extremely helpful and considerate of all patrons. Rachel Thompson - 3A Drama and Theatre student. She works as a turnkey and developed the "Turnkey Skit". Activities are Arts Student Union, Canada Day and many other volunteer positions on and off campus. Currently she is assisting with the program ming of the new Centre. She is recognized for enthusiasm, interest and promotional activities. Meredith L. Fuller - 4A English and Applied Studies student. Meredith received a Faculty of Arts Entrance scholarship and the Federal Provincial Simulation Conference award. She worked at S&P for past eight months managing client accounts worth $1.5 M. Performance ratings were excellent and outstanding. Previous work experience V2 Conference Centre and two terms a CS 100 tutor and received excellent performance evaluations, and also worked at the Bombshelter. Currently, she is planning to help out UW Visitor's Reception at tour guide. Skye Legon - 2B Mechanical Engineering student. Good academic standing. Very highly thought of by employer, with excellent and outstanding performance evaluations. On campus he is in volved in student affairs. Jane Lim - 3A Psychology, Applied Studies Co-op student. She has completed two terms with Trans port Canada in marketing and public relations as well as one term with Employment & Immigration. She was a key organizer for the Ottawa Arts student barbecue this summer. John David Tweddell - 4A Mechanical Engineering student. Worked on Co-op term at Dupont Canada. Employer gave him "outstanding" on his work. Comments were "Having David in our organization has vastly improved our effectiveness. Very few students are put in a position of leading an organization through a step change in both technology and mentality. The results of David's work have been outstanding even when mea sured against our toughest standards." He received a citation from the company. Faculty of Applied Health Sciences Dawn L. Has had a paper accepted as a senior author in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine based on her Master's thesis and she has given a number of presentations at conferences. Colleen is progressing with extending her Master's thesis into an outstanding doctoral thesis along with working part-time in the Research Department at Freeport Hos pital. Lynn Arthur Megeney - Ph.D student in Kinesiology. Has published four Journal papers and two abstracts. Christy Gwen Woolcott - 4th year Health Studies student. Dean's Honours List. Teaching Assistant for Health Studies courses and worked for Waterloo Smoking Projects doing data entry and data collection. Recipient of Health Studies Upper Year Scholarship and NSERC (Spring 1993). Faculty of Arts Philip Glen Dodgson - PhD student in Psychology. Has offered leadership in the Student Advisory Committee. Active in all aspects of the advisory committee work including a review of student's reaction to supervision, a development of rationale for laboratory room assignment. An excellent interface between the 34 PhD students and their faculty in the Clinical Division for Department. Mona Gleason - PhD student in History student. An outstanding student with strong theoretical bent, highly developed research skills and sophisticated understanding of methodological issues currently confronting discipline of his tory. Presented paper at a major conference in New Orleans and published an article in Ontario Historical Society. Jay W. Green - Honours Charetered Accountancy Studies/MAcc program. One of the strongest academic achievers in the program. This past year he was one of a two-person team that won the Central Ontario Universities Accounting Case Competition, sponsored by Doane Raymond, Chartered Accoun tants. Very pleasant and personable individual who is very easy to deal with in any situation. Judith C. Hemming - 4A English and Applied Studies student. Ex cellent work terms: Goodwill Industries, PSC Canada, Bell Canada, and St. Peterburg Orphanage. St.P.-Russia. This was a highly unusual volunteer work term and Judith is one of our first Community and World Service Co-op scholars. Much service work is also done in her church. Alison Hitchens - 4th year Honours Anthropology student. Winner of 1993 Silver Medal in Anthropology for academic excel lence - overall average of 91.6 and major average of 92.4. James J. Madden - PhD Sociology student. Recipient of SSHRC award. Strong community involvement (various groups that enhance understanding and personal growth), working on environ mental research project (Grand River Conservation) and keeps others in mind when they are job searching and assists with thoughtfulness and exchange of ideas. Avrind Mani - 4A Economics and Applied Economics, Hons Co-op student. Outstanding academic achievement and overall average of 87.2% and major average of 90.1%. Sandra Murray - PhD Psychology student. Outstanding student and winner of the Faculty of Arts Gold Medal, 1990 and her ac complishments would probably place her within the elite group of most promising two or three forthcoming graduates in her discipline in the world this year. Has five publications, including a senior-author paper in the most prestigious journal and has another pending review there as well. Sonia Nalywajko - 4th year History student. Though only one member, and not the Chair of the Arts Student Union's Orienta tion Committee, Sonia served the Faculty Arts by making virtually all the arrangements for the week-long Orientation. This activity includes working closely with Undergraduate Office and the Office of Dean in planning and conducting the Arts version of Academic Orientation Day, a new project un dertaken by all faculties of the University. Her efforts con tributed significantly to the development and conduct of an orientation program of which the Faculty of Arts can be proud. Norine Jane Verberg - PhD sociology student. Presented a paper at Learned's in Ottawa and Trier, Germany. Involved and sup portive in Women's Issues and strongly involved with fellow students in such areas as locating information, assisting with ideas to overcome financial concerns, and taking students along to other beneficial learning and social events. Carol Wiest - 4B Honours English and Rhetoric and Professional Writing Applied Studies student. Dean's Honours List. Carol has had excellent work terms with Canada Employment, Secretary of State, and PSC Canada. Her volunteer work includes the Canadian Girl Guides, Pathfinders and CNIB. She manages exceed ingly well despite her vision deficit. Joel R. Wohlgemut - 3rd year Religious Studies student. Outstanding academic accomplishment, overall average 94.2% and major Religious Studies average 92.6%. He skilled in languages, mathematics and the humanities. Faculty of Engineering Andrea Jane Baxter - MASc Systems Design Engineering student. As an undergraduate won many awards and participated actively on campus. As Master student, she is teaching assistant (Linear Signals & Systems) and a research assistant (Installed and modified Image Compression Freeware on VIP system). Other activities include Shad Valley Program Manager 1993, Village Don for two years, and Women in Engineering Graduate Studies Committee. Robert J. Bauer - 4A Mechanical Engineering student. Has an outstanding academic record. Extracurricular activities include class academic representative, WEEF, and set up of computer system for special education classes at the University Heights High School. International work term in Korea this summer. Active in sports, plays the piano and violin and makes model airplanes. Bruce Allen Hecht - MASc Electrical and Computer Engineering student. Top performer in both academic courses and research. One of the best teaching assistant in the past four years. In research he had been instrumental in achieving the world's first Silicon-Germanium MOSFET device which showed significant performance advantage over conventional silicon MOSFET device. Marios A. Ioannidis - PhD Chemical Engineering student. Outstanding academic achievement. He passed his MASc program and transferred to the PhD program and completed it in 12 terms. His PhD dissertation is of outstanding quality. Four papers published and two more are being prepared. His work has great impact on Modelling Capillary and flow behaviour in Het erogeneous Porous Media with applications to oil recovery and ground water hydrology. Stanley J.C. Teraa - Combined B.A.Sc/MASc in Mechanical En gineering student. 1993 Student Technical Paper competition sponsored by the American Gear Manufacturers Association. The title of the paper "Spur Gear Bending Strength Geometry Fac tors - A Comparison of AGMA and ISO Standards". MASc topic involves the further comparison of AGMA and ISO standards and the development of strength analysis software for spur and helical gears. Andrew Martin VanBerkel - MASc Management Studies student. Finalist for this year's Clough Memorial Award for the best first year student in Management Sciences. Andrew holds an NSERC postgraduate Award and is a recipient of the Faculty of Engineering bursaries each term he has been eligible. He is a member of the executive of the Management Science Student Association. He will be presenting results from his thesis at an up coming international conference. Winner of 1992-93 Clough Memorial Award at the best MASc first year student in the Department and awarded a Faculty of Engineering Bursary each term of eligibility. Recipient of Federation of Students Rookie of the Year Award for her outstanding performance in women's swimming. Kathleen K. Lai - 3rd Year Honours Co-op student. Kathy is a strong student and successfully combines her extra-curricular activities with her studies in Operations Research, a field of mathematics that deals with the problems of management in business and government. Currently she is Vice-President of Ac tivity and Services for the Math Society and for Orientation was "Big Sister" to a group of first year students. James McCarron - PhD Pure Mathematics student. Conscientious instructor of a section of Math 136. In the past year a second paper accepted for publication - a rare achievement for a graduate student. He serves as Pure Math Dept. student rep on the Mathematics Faculty Graduate Committee and will assist with the Teaching Assistant Orientation Seminar. Sheena Mairi McRae - PhD Applied Mathematics student. Recipient of NSERC PGS holder and a Queen Elizabeth II scholar ship. Has co-authored several publications based on PhD research and has presented a paper at an international conference. Organized a regular seminar on "Foundations of Quantum Mechanics" which brought together people from Mathematics, Physics and Philosophy. She is also accomplished musician. Glenn Norman Paulley - PhD Computer Science student. Graduate representative on the Computer Science Graduate Committee and has recently been appointed the Graduate Student Rep for the Mathematics Faculty Graduate Affairs Committee and the Senate Graduate Council. James M. Redekop - Ph.D Statistics and Actuarial Science student. James has achieved academic excellent but also served as a student liaison officer in the department. Through him, some graduate students' concerns were brought to the Depart ment's attention and immediately addressed. Eric Sutherland - 4th year C&O and Statistics Double Honours student. Dean's Honours List in Combinatorics & Optimization. He is active in the Math Society, co-director for 1933 Orienta tion, and frequently volunteers in the Math Office. Last fall Eric was alternate member of UW Putnam team and ranked 150. In August he travelled to Denmark to compete as a member of the Canadian Team in the World Junior Bridge Championships. B.J. (Bobby Joe) York - 2nd year Honours Math/Mgt Accounting student. B.J. is doing well in the Math/ Management Accounting program which combines mathematics with accounting and business-related studies. Lisa entered UW on a Watsearch Research Assistantship. She has been a Canada Scholar, a tireless debater, and is now Presi dent of the UW Chem Club. John F. Corrigan - PhD Chemistry student. Recipient of Society of Chemical Industry Merit Award 1991, later an Ontario Gradu ate Scholarship and now Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Postgraduate Scholarship. A dozen of research publications to his credit and a similar number of research presentations at national and international professional meet ings. Tim Dillow - 3rd year Science student. Currently President of Science Society and Co-Director of Science Orientation for 1993. Tim was president of his high school's peer helpers association, Thirty's manager and has his eye on doing environmental science in Australia. Gloria Elliott - 4th year Chemistry student. Gloria came to UW from Memorial University in Newfoundland and has recently re turned from a 6-month work term in Japan. Diane Haak - 2nd year Biology student. A 9th grade school- leaver, Diane decided 14 years later to complete high school and try for a medical degree and she is well on her way. Raising a family, doing mission work in Nigeria and working in a children's home are all part of her life. Alex Kennedy - 4th year Optometry student. Currently is Pres ident of the Optometry Student Society. Machell Thomas Pardue - PhD Optometry and Biology student. A researcher on ciliary muscle morphology and accommodation, Machelle came from Wyoming where she became known for "her creativity, her organizational skills and her ability to adapt" She has held an Ontario Graduate Scholarship. Astride Silis - 4th year Applied Earth Science and Geology student. Worked this summer for the Latvian Geological Survey, and their fossil samples will form the topic of her BSc thesis. Teaches Latvian part-time at a Hamilton school. Lucas Young - 4B Honours Applied Physics student. Lucas is President of the UW Physics Club, was a member of the Debating Society, contributed political and economic articles to Imprint, started two small businesses in Nova Scotia this summer and was second in a Conservation Party election for his riding. Federation of Students Christine Dewhurst - Math CA Honours Co-op student. Has been a Don in Village I for several terms and Head Don in Spring 1992, also an employee of Fed Hall. Chairperson for Village 1 Orientation Committee 1991 and currently is the Village Charity Ball 1993. Founded the Federation's Student Part-Time Employment Centre and was a member of Employment Standards Committee. Very involved in improving the quality of student life. Jason Simpson - Optometry student. Jason exemplified a balance between optometry and student issues, and emphasized the impor tance of informing student about issues that affect them. Activities included: President of Optometry Student Society, student director of Waterloo Science Endowment Fund and Science Foundation. Founder of Optometry Optical Trade Show and UW Trustee for the American Optometric Student Association. With eye on the bigger picture, Jason managed to pursue developments that impacted the profession of optometry. Tara has been a diligent volunteer with the Office for Persons with Disabilities and the Ontario Red Cross. She is a very deter mined student who offers encouragement, academic, and emotional support to fellow students. Thomas Little - 3rd year Sociology student. As a mature stu dent, Tom creatively balances his role as an active volunteer/support staff at the Office for Persons with Disabilities and his position as superintendent of Married Student Apartments, while maintaining a high academic standard. Student Alumni Association Jeff Stransky - 3B Geography student. First recipient of the prestigious SAA/SF District II Award for Most Outstanding Member. Currently he is President of Student Alumni Association. The other side of Jeff is UW mascot Pounce de Lion which he unfailingly "pounces" around at every campus event, from Homecoming to Canada Day. He spearheaded a fund raising initiative and raised $2000 to purchase a new "Cadillac" costume and was also award $1,000 grant from an on- campus quality of student life initiative for the costume. UW Security Pauline James - Honours Psychology (Coursework) student. Pauline is very active in Student Service endeavours. Currently she is Co-Coordinator of the Student Security Service "Walksafe" program and accepted as a Don in Village II. Some of her past activities has been a tutored for the Math Faculty, volunteer for Federation of Students Winterfest and Summerfest, President of Village I Council, Chair of Women's Issue Board, and a term leader for Campus Safety Audit.
